چکیده

Climate variability at sub-Milankovitch periods (between 2 and 15 kyr) is studied in a set of transient simulations with a coupled atmosphere/ocean/vegetation model of intermediate complexity (CLIMBER-2). Focus is on the region influenced by the African and Asian summer monsoon. Pronounced variations at periods of about 10 kyr (Asia and Africa) and about 5 kyr (Asia) are found in the monsoonal runoff in response to the precessional forcing. In the model this is due to the following mechanism. For low summer insolation (precession maximum) precipitation is low and desert expands at the expense of grass, while for high insolation (precession minimum) precipitation is high and the tree fraction increases also reducing the grass fraction. This induces sub-Milankovitch variations in the grass fraction and associated variations in the water holding capacity of the soil. The runoff does not exhibit sub-Milankovitch variability when vegetation is kept fixed. High-latitude vegetation also exhibits sub-Milankovitch variability under both obliquity and precessional forcing. We thus hypothesize that sub-Milankovitch variability can occur due to the dynamic response of the vegetation. However, this mechanism should be further tested with more sophisticated climate/vegetation models.

Pollen analyses of sediments from Holes 1019C, 1019E, 1020C, and 1020D as well as piston Core EW9504-17 provide continuous, chronostratigraphically controlled proxy vegetation and climate data for coastal northwest North America for the last ~500 k.y. Systematic changes in the representation of the diagnostic components of northern California plant assemblages clearly show orbital-scale variati...

Detection of long term modulation orbital cycles in the sea level oscillations using clean algorithm of spectral analysis

The need for a unified astronomical theory of sea-level changes and associated climatic variations motivates the search for Milankovitch eccentricity rhythms in the global sea level variations. The available latest sea level record exhibits long term trend with superimposed higher order frequency oscillations. A new powerful spectral technique based on the one dimensional clean deconvolution al...

Evaluation of Grassland Dynamics in the Northern-Tibet Plateau of China Using Remote Sensing and Climate Data

The grassland ecosystem in the Northern-Tibet Plateau (NTP) of China is verysensitive to weather and climate conditions of the region. In this study, we investigate thespatial and temporal variations of the grassland ecosystem in the NTP using theNOAA/AVHRR ten-day maximum NDVI composite data of 1981-2001. The relationshipsamong Vegetation Peak-Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (VP-NDVI) a...

Upscaling of spatially explicit and linked time- and space-discrete models simulating vegetation dynamics under climate change

Models applied for simulating the impact of climate change on large scale vegetation dynamics generally face the trade-off between computational expenses (computation time and memory) and modelled detail. Global models often abstract from processes entailing spatial linkages, e.g. species migration, and have too coarse resolutions to depictfrom processes entailing spatial linkages, e.g. species...
